Vietnam-US mark 30 years of ties with growing trust and strategic vision

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Dung has shared his views with the media on the significance of the 30th anniversary of normalized Vietnam-US ties (1995–2025) and key areas with strong potential for future cooperation.

According to Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung, the 30-year milestone marks a highly meaningful chapter in Vietnam–US relations. From former adversaries after the war, the two countries have moved beyond their differences to become comprehensive strategic partners, an exceptional journey in international relations. For Vietnam, this outcome demonstrates the consistency of its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification, and deep integration for peace and development.

The development of Vietnam–US relations has been boosted by mutual trust, shared strategic interests, and a commitment to substantive cooperation. The Ambassador identified four key factors behind this progress. First is the vision and political will of both countries’ leaders. Second is the principle of mutual respect, particularly for each other’s independence, sovereignty, and political institutions.

Third is the joint effort to deal with war legacies, such as dioxin remediation, unexploded ordnance clearance, support for Agent Orange victims, and the search for the missing, efforts that carry profound humanitarian value. And fourth is the powerful engine of economic and trade cooperation, with two-way trade growing over 200-fold in the past 30 years, making Vietnam one of the US’ top partners in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Regarding the outlook for future cooperation, Ambassador Dung noted that despite ongoing global and regional uncertainties, Vietnam–US relations have remained stable and on a positive trajectory. This is a relationship with strategic depth, mutual complementarity, strong adaptability, and practical benefits for both sides.

Looking ahead, the two countries can prioritize cooperation in several key areas. Chief among them are economic, trade, and investment ties, with a focus on high technology, supply chains, agricultural tech, and digital transformation. Vietnam aspires to be a trusted partner of the US in global supply chains.

Science and technology cooperation and innovation are also emerging as new highlights, especially in fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and healthcare. Other important pillars will continue to include education and high-quality workforce development, defense and security, people-to-people exchanges, and war legacy remediation. These are all areas that the two countries’ leaders identified as priorities when upgrading their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2023, the Vietnamese diplomat stressed.

Marking three decades of normalized ties, Ambassador Dung emphasized Vietnam’s hope to further elevate the relationship, not only by broadening areas of cooperation but by deepening mutual understanding and trust. He laid stress on the importance of building a strong social foundation for bilateral ties, where people of both countries, especially younger generations, can better understand each other, learn from one another, and together create shared value.

Vietnam hopes that American friends will continue to stand alongside the country, not only as a comprehensive strategic partner, but also as sincere companions who share a common aspiration for a peaceful, stable, and inclusive world. Vietnam will remain a reliable and responsible partner, working with the US to help shape a better future for the region and the world, he said.
