Successful reciprocal tariff negotiations affirm US respect for Vietnam
VOV.VN - Frequent, high-level exchanges between the two countries’ leaders to negotiate reciprocal tariffs demonstrate that Vietnam-US relations are at their best and demonstrate the United States’ respect for Vietnam.

This was affirmed by US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper at a press meeting on the morning of July 8 in Hanoi, ahead of the celebration marking 30 years since the normalization of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
At the meeting, Ambassador Marc Knapper emphasized that Vietnam-US relations have grown robustly over the past 30 years, with trade and economic cooperation as a top priority.
Vietnam is currently the US’ 8th largest trading partner, while the US remains Vietnam’s largest export market.
US businesses are investing heavily in Vietnam, while a growing number of Vietnamese firms are expanding into the US. This reflects the strong belief of enterprises from both countries in the huge potential for cooperation.
According to US Ambassador Marc Knapper, the fact that General Secretary To Lam held two phone calls with President Donald Trump illustrates Vietnam’s proactive approach and both sides’ determination to resolve outstanding issues related to reciprocal tariffs.
High-level negotiations between the two countries show that Vietnam-US relations are at their best, and reflect the US’ respect for Vietnam, along with a shared desire to further advance the bilateral partnership for the benefit of both peoples.
Also during the meeting, Ambassador Marc Knapper noted that Vietnam and the US are now poised for new cooperation opportunities in high-tech industries, particularly semiconductors. He emphasized that Vietnam has the capacity and conditions to become a global destination for high-tech manufacturing. Strengthening technological cooperation, he said, would serve the interests of both countries.
At the government level, the United States is working closely to support American universities, such as Arizona State University in partnering with Vietnamese universities to develop training programs in high-tech fields. For example, Ambassador Knapper noted that semiconductor and advanced engineering curricula similar to those in the US are being introduced in Vietnam.
Ambassador Marc Knapper added that at the individual and private sector level, many US universities are also highly interested in co-operating with Vietnam. The goal is to help Vietnam play a greater and more important role in the global high-tech value chain toward becoming a regional and global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, where the Vietnamese spirit of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship can fully thrive.
