Son Doong Cave chosen as location for Bollywood film project SILAA

VOV.VN - The breathtaking Son Doong Cave, located in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, central Vietnam, will serve as a key filming location for the upcoming Indian feature film SILAA, directed by renowned Bollywood filmmaker Omung Kumar.

The production has a reported budget of US$4 million and marks the first time a Bollywood film will be shot inside the world’s largest cave.

According to Le Minh Tuan, director of the Quang Tri provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the film crew has officially confirmed plans to film in various locations throughout the province, Son Doong Cave will be a primary highlight.

Tuan revealed that Quang Tri will host a welcome ceremony at the airport and a special cultural exchange with the crew upon completion of filming in the region.

The production team, consisting of approximately 100 members, will spend three weeks filming in Quang Tri. Among them, only 12 people will be granted access to Son Doong Cave to film key scenes. Additional filming will take place in nearby cave systems, including Hang Tien, Tu Lan, and Hang Chuot in the Tan Hoa area.

Besides Quang Tri, SILAA will also feature scenes shot in other scenic destinations across Vietnam such as Cao Bang and Quang Ninh provinces. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in early August 2025, with a global release planned for 2026.

Nguyen Chau A, CEO of Oxalis Ltd., known for offering adventure excursions to Son Doong Cave, confirmed that the Indian film crew had signed a contract with his company to film several scenes of the Bollywood movie inside the cave.

In 2015, Son Doong gained international attention when the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) broadcasted live a segment of Good Morning America, a popular programme watched by an average of six million people every day, from the cave.

Son Doong is said to be between 400 million and 450 million years old, despite the fact that it was only officially discovered as recently as 2009. The cave has a width of 150 metres, a height of more than 200 metres, and a length of roughly nine kilometres. It was declared the largest in the world upon its discovery and subsequently opening up to tourists in 2013.

From 1990 to 2022, more than 450 large and small caves have been explored by the British-Vietnamese cave expert team led by Howard Limbert.

Son Doong Cave was discovered by a local man named Ho Khanh in 1990 and then explored by British-Vietnamese cave experts between 2009 and 2010.
