Armed men on Wednesday ambushed minibuses carrying 30 Iranian pilgrims near the restive city of Baquba, north of Baghdad, killing at least five of them, according to local police.

This immediately triggered a demand from Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that Baghdad should do more to protect religious tourists.

Mr Ali Khamenei said in a statement on his website that Tehran expected Baghdad to provide ‘maximum’ security for pilgrims travelling to Shiite holy sites in Iraq. He also blamed the attacks on US forces and Israel.

The slaughter came just a day after a wave of attacks across Iraq killed 24 people.
