A conference to review the national programme on clean water and environment in rural areas in 2006-2010 was held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in Hanoi on February 25.

Over the past five years, the programme has mobilised VND20.7 billion for projects to supply clean water to over 52 million people in the rural areas.

Vietnam now has over 32,000 schools and kindergartens and nearly 8,000 medical units with clean water and toilets. However, only 12 million households have standard water-closets, 10 percent lower than the set target.

In the 2011-2015 period, the programme aims to provide clean water to over 95 percent of rural residents and the target is for 75 percent of households to have toilets.

All schools, medical units, and market places in the rural areas will have clean water and outhouses which will be well managed to ensure good hygiene. In addition, more than 60 percent of communes across the country will have waste deposits.
