The relationship between unsustainable fishing and poverty was highlighted at the “Green Meeting” held recently by the WWF Greater Mekong with the participation of government agencies, research institutes and NGOs.
The seminar, the second of its kind, discussed in detail the trend of sustainable near-shore fishing and its effects on poor residents in coastal areas.
The WWF reported that there has been a sharp decline in Vietnam’s near-shore fishing as it has a great negative impact on the lives and economic situation of coastal fishermen. The agency considered the country’s fisheries plan until 2010 a major advance with a 50 percent cut of near-shore fishing.
Meanwhile, the National Directorate for Aquatic Resources Protection presented up-to-date information on the real situation and trend of near-shore fishing, which has been conducted manually on a small scale in Vietnam.
“The Vietnamese Government is making efforts to make near-shore fisheries stable and sustainable while assuring the livelihood of citizens,” said Le Tran Nguyen Hung, Head of the Directorate.
