Host Vietnam and Belarus met in the final match of group B of the International Women’s Volleyball Tournament (VTV Cup) held in the gymnasium of northern Vinh Phuc province on July 26.

The Vietnam team had to devise tactics to defeat their stronger rivals.

The Vietnamese team, whose average height is only 1.75 m, applied desperate defensing tactics near the net to stifle their opponents. Dang Thi Hong, a formidable mid-court player of the team, regularly provided balls for her teammates to score unexpectedly from both sides of the net.

As a result, Vietnam won 25-1 and 25-8 in the first two sets. During the third set, Belarus counterattacked to lead 7-3, but the host players quickly reorganised their formations to strike back with scores of 14-9, 18-3 and 25-18 in their favour. Vietnam won 3-0 and became the leader of group B following three successive wins.

Vietnam will play Thailand in the semifinal at 21:00, July 27, while China’s Si Chuan team will face their compatriots from Nankai.
