Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem arrived in San Francisco, California on March 10, beginning his official visit to the United States lasting until March 18.

Deputy PM Khiem had working sessions with heads of several universities and colleges in California, the mayor of Berkeley city, the Managing Director of the Bay Area World Trade Centre, and Thomas Wu, CEO of the United Commercial Bank.

He also met with more than 250 overseas Vietnamese in California and the staff of the General Consulate of Vietnam in San Francisco. He expressed his pleasure at the growth of the Vietnamese community abroad and said he was very moved by sentiments expressed by the overseas Vietnamese on his visit to the US.

The Deputy PM stated that the Party and Government consider overseas Vietnamese an important part of the Vietnamese community. The Government has actively solved issues related to overseas Vietnamese, namely visa exemption and rights to purchase property and invest in the country, he added.

Mr Khiem directly answered questions from overseas Vietnamese on issues related to State management, policies regarding overseas Vietnamese, as well as measures linking Vietnamese people at home and abroad.

On March 11-12, Deputy PM Khiem and his entourage met with organisations, agencies, political circles and the business community in California.
