Thailand to end trial of civilians by military courts

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who is also head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), has ordered to end trials of citizens accused of royal defamation and other national security crimes in military courts.

The cases would be judged by judicial courts as from September 12, according to the Royal Gazette.

The crimes include allegations of lese majeste, sedition and possession of war weapons.

Civilians accused of the crimes were tried in military courts from May 25, 2014, a few days after the coup to overthrow premier Yingluk Shinawatra.
