Thailand lifts overseas travel ban for dissidents

Thailand will loosen its grip on dissident politicians by lifting overseas travel ban faced by many of them, starting from June 1.

Only those facing court proceedings will still need to go through regular channels to seek permission to go abroad, said the government’s spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd.

The decision was made after chiefs of the armed forces, police and security agencies met on May 27 to evaluate the country’s political situation ahead of the August 7 referendum.

Since the coup, the junta has arrested hundreds of anti-government academics and critics. After being released, they vowed to not go abroad without approval.
