New President of Myanmar sworn in

U Htin Kyaw, a member of Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party, was sworn in as President of Myanmar in the capital of Nay Pyi Taw, on March 30.

The new President, the first civilian president in Myanmar for decades, committed himself to being loyal to Myanmar’s people.

The military-assigned First Vice President Myint Swe and the Second Vice President Henry Van Thio – another NLD member, also took the oath of office in the presence of parliament speaker Win Khaing Than.

Htin Kyaw’s cabinet was also sworn in at the President’s office in Nay Pyi Taw the same day.
In his first address to the parliament, Htin Kyaw said the new government will work for national reconciliation, peace and enhanced living standards in the country.

He stressed the cabinet’s duty in drawing up a constitution that is appropriate for Myanmar and in compliance with democratic standards.

Leader of the ruling NLD Aung San Suu Kyi has been assigned as the new Foreign Minister, as well as Minister of the President's Office, Minister of Education, and Minister of Electric Power and Energy.
