Myanmar parliament approves new ministry

Myanmar 's parliament on May 10 approved the addition of the Ministry of the Office of State Counselor to the new government’s set-up at the proposal of President U Htin Kyaw.

Myanmar 's new government began operating on April 1 with 21 ministries run by 18 ministers, reducing the numbers from 36 and 32 respectively in the previous government. 

With the addition, the Myanmar government now has a total of 22 ministries.

In addition to heading the Ministry of the Office of State Counselor, Aung San Suu Kyi holds two more posts - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the President's Office.

According to the 2008 constitution, the three ministries of home affairs, border affairs and defence are run by military personnel.
