Vietnam qualify for 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, keep World Cup hopes alive
VOV.VN - The Vietnam women’s national football team have officially booked their place at the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup after a dominant 4-0 win over Guam on July 5 at Viet Tri Stadium in northern Phu Tho province.
The result also keeps their hopes alive for a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Facing a much lower-ranked Guam side in their final qualifier, head coach Mai Duc Chung’s squad wasted no time asserting control. Midfielder Nguyen Thi Van opened the scoring in just the 2nd minute, setting the tone for a one-sided affair.
Vietnam continued to pile on the pressure, playing almost entirely in Guam’s half. Forward Bich Thuy struck twice in quick succession, in the 13th and 26th minutes, thereby sending Vietnam into halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead.
In the second half, Coach Chung rotated his squad, giving valuable minutes to several young and reserve players. Despite the changes, Vietnam maintained their dominance, with striker Hai Yen adding a fourth goal to seal the comprehensive win.
With this victory, Vietnam topped Group B with a perfect record, three wins from three matches, 17 goals scored, and none conceded. They now advance to the final tournament of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
Importantly, performances at the 2026 Asian Cup will count towards qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, giving Vietnam a crucial opportunity to return to the global stage.
