Thao Nguyen knocked out of 2025 Women’s Chess World Cup in Georgia
VOV.VN - International Master Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Vietnam’s sole representative at the 2025 Women’s Chess World Cup, was eliminated in the first round after a 1.5-0.5 loss to Georgia’s 15-year-old rising star Mgeladze Kesaria on July 11.

Thao Nguyen struggled in the first game of the standard chess format, allowing Kesaria to claim an early victory. Despite a tense and error-prone second game in which both players missed opportunities, the match ended in a draw, sealing Nguyen’s early exit from the tournament.
Organised by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), the event, which is getting underway in Georgia from July 5 to 29, has featured 107 of the world’s top female players.
Thao Nguyen earned her spot in the prestigious tournament thanks to her strong showing at the 2024 Chess Olympiad.
While her run has ended, Vietnam remains represented in the men’s competition by Grandmasters Le Quang Liem and Le Tuan Minh.
