Nearly 400 Overseas Vietnamese join football tournament in Russia
VOV.VN - A football tournament held for Vietnamese expats in Russia kicked off in Moscow on June 20, drawing the participation of around 400 players living and working in Russia.
The football tournament, the largest of its kind held by Overseas Vietnamese Association, is to mark the 100th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s arrival in Petrograd, now St. Petersburg, on June 30, 1923 during his journey for national salvation.
Do Xuan Hoang, president of the Overseas Vietnamese Association in Russia, said the traditional football tournament helps to arouse the passion for physical sports and to strengthen solidarity among the Overseas Vietnamese community in Russia.
This year’s edition of the sporting activity duly broke the record for the number of participating teams with 15 teams and 400 athletes.
The 15 participating teams were divided into three groups, with the best six teams and two third-placed teams progressing to the knockout stage after 30 matches.
