Historic fourth place for Vietnam at World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships
VOV.VN - Vietnam has ended the World Taekwondo Poomsae (performance) Championships 2024 in fourth place, the highest ever position in the country’s history.
At the World Taekwondo Poomsae (performance) Championships 2024 taking place in Hong Kong (China) from November 30 to December 4, Vietnam won three gold, two silver, and five bronze medals, sharing fourth place with Iran.
The Republic of Korea took the lead with a total of 17 gold medals, followed by the United States and Taiwan (China) with eight and four gold medals, respectively.
Vietnam had sent 40 athletes to the championship hoping to secure silver medals. However, the athletes did better than expected, bringing home three gold medals in the over-17 freestyle mixed team, the U50 female team, and the pair U50 class.
Vietnamese athletes went over eight years of not winning any medal at the tournament, with their previous wins coming back at the global taekwondo championship held in Peru in 2016 when they bagged only two gold medals.
The Hong Kong tournament is the highest level of taekwondo competition in the world outside of the Olympics, featuring a record number of 1,727 athletes from 77 countries and regions. The old record went to the Chinese Taipei edition with 1,274 competitors from 59 delegations in 2018.
