Late diagnosis is mainly responsible for the high rates of cervical cancer in Vietnam and other developing countries, according to a workshop in Hanoi on December 13.

It reported that on average, 20.3 cases of cervical cancer are found in every 100,000 Vietnamese women and the cervical cancer rate in southern Vietnam is 4-5 times higher than that in the northern region.

Many studies revealed that the figures are much higher in the groups of women that work in agriculture, have more than one sexual partner, engage in sexual relations at a young age or contract sexually transmitted diseases.

Vice Rector of the Public Health College Tran Huu Bich emphasized the necessity to encourage women to have an early diagnosis to get the appropriate treatment in time.

However, Vietnam does not have a systematic cervical cancer detection programme with cell tests, which are only available in big cities and residential centres.
