Vietnamese scientists discover anti-blood cancer agent from rice

VOV.VN - Early October saw Cancers magazine publish the results of research conducted by Vietnamese Prof. Dr. Tran Dang Xuan and his colleagues at Hiroshima University in Japan to discover anti-blood cancer agents in rice.

The research titled ‘Cytotoxic Mechanism of Momilactones A and B against Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia and Multiple Myeloma Cell Lines’, is authored by Vietnamese Prof. Dr. Tran Dang Xuan, Assistant Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Quan, Dr. La Hoang Anh, Prof. Dr. Takami Akiyoshi, and Master Vu Quang Lam of Aichi Medical University.

The research conducted by scientists indicate that momilactones, which can be found only in rice, exhibit a minor effect on a non-cancerous cell line, thereby implying that they are promising candidates for developing novel anti-acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) L and anti-multiple myeloma (MM) medicines.

With these potential results recorded, Prof. Dr. Xuan and colleagues hope that the finding provide novel insights into the anticancer property of momilactones, which can be a premise for future studies and developments of momilactone-based anticancer medicines.
