Vietnamese pupils win top prizes at Australian Mathematics Competitions

VOV.VN - Eleven Vietnamese pupils have won high prizes at the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) and Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (AIMO), the first to be held in Vietnam so far.

At an award ceremony in Hanoi on December 6, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Craig Chittick congratulated 11 Vietnamese winners.

Earlier in July, the first AMC in Vietnam attracted the participation of 1,230 pupils from 16 provinces and cities nationwide. Eight pupils won prizes. Nguyen Manh Quan from Hanoi Amsterdam School bagged a medal for Year 7 students, ranking 4th among global 7th grade students.

The AMC was introduced into Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students. Since then it has served almost all Australian secondary schools and many primary schools, providing feedback and enrichment to schools and students.

It has become the largest single event on the Australian education calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in over 30 countries around the globe. By 2015, the AMC has attracted more than 14.5 million entries. Students are asked to solve 30 problems in 60 minutes (Years 3–6) or 75 minutes (Years 7–12).

The AIMO took place in September 2016 at Cau Giay Junior Secondary School with more than 460 contestants. Vietnamese pupils achieved 4 out of total 41 global prizes and 15 others got outstanding marks.
