Vietnam sets target of eradicating plastic waste

VOV.VN - Vietnam discharges some 25 million tons of solid waste each year, of which plastic waste accounts for 2 million tons, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE).

Experts said the management capacity for the treatment of plastic waste nationwide is limited, largely due to outdated waste treatment technologies and issues relating to collection and classification of garbage.

Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information and Education said spreading information on campaigns against plastic waste should focus on all members of society, with a particular focus on businesses and households who can be directly involved in reducing plastic waste in their production activities and daily lives.

Nguyen Dinh Trong, director of T-TECH Vietnam, said regulations and policies should be synchronised in line with planning and technology, while relevant agencies need to focus on raising public awareness.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) submitted a national action plan on the management of ocean plastic waste up until the year 2030 for the Prime Minister’s approval, on June 17, 2019.

Accordingly, the MONRE has proposed seven key tasks that focus on raising public awareness about plastic products and ocean plastic waste as well as reducing ocean plastic waste from the mainland.

Furthermore, they will strengthen community activities in order to clean up beaches, speed up the implementation of science and technology whilst dealing with the issue, and enhance international co-operation in management over ocean plastic waste.
