Vietnam hands over remains of American MIA

VOV.VN - Vietnamese authorities on September 24 handed over the remains of an American serviceman listed as missing in action (MIA) during the war to US representatives in Hanoi.

Present at the ceremony were representat6ives of the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP), US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink, representatives of the POW/MIA Accounting Agency and the US MIA Office in Hanoi.

The remains were unearthed during the 140th search lasting from July to September 2020. The remains were unilaterally examined by Vietnamese forensic experts and they would be transported to Hawaii, the US, for further verification.

Addressing the event, Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink appreciated the Government and people of Vietnam for their full and effective cooperation in the MIA work, and voiced the US commitment to providing continued support for Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of the past war.

The search for the remains of American servicemen missing during the war in Vietnam is a humanitarian activity between the two governments of Vietnam and the United States. This is the 154th handover of the remains since 1973.
