Social media users required to verify identities for content publishing
VOV.VN - Social network users in Vietnam will be required to provide basic personal information, including full name, date of birth, and mobile phone number as of December 25, in order to post stories.
The information was unveiled in the government’s latest decree No 147 on management, provision, and use of the Internet and cyber information.
It is part of measures to manage and control information on social media, aiming to enhance security, privacy, and reduce misinformation or harmful content.
Under the decree, only verified accounts can post information, including writing articles, comments, livestreaming, and sharing information on social networks.
In cases where phone numbers cannot be used, social media accounts will require authentication with personal identification numbers under the law on electronic identification and authentication.
In particular, those who use social networking services to livestream for commercial purposes must authenticate their accounts with personal identification numbers.
In the event that the user of social networks is a child under 16 years old, the child's parent or legal guardian is required to register an account using their personal information.
In addition, the child's parent or legal guardian must also be responsible for monitoring and controlling the content that the child accesses, posts, and shares information on social networks.
As of November 2024, Vietnam had about 110 million social media accounts, using major social media platforms such as Zalo, Facebook, Youtube, TikTok, and Instagram.
