Repairs to HCM City walking street start
Repair works began on May 15 to fix defects along the Nguyen Hue pedestrian street, the new get-together location for city-dwellers and tourists in Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the venue’s developer, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Traffic Management Zone No.1, workers are replacing 32 stone manhole covers with cast iron lids, with the work scheduled to be completed by the end of next month.
The 670 meter long, granite-paved Nguyen Hue pedestrian street spans from Le Thanh Ton to Le Loi Street in the heart of the city.
The VND497.5 billion (US$22.21 million) street was opened in April 2015 and has become a favorite destination for local people as well as tourists.
The venue attracts many people every night, and gets even more crowded on the weekend.

Earlier on May 15, traffic and other activities were banned along the pedestrian street between 2:00 pm and 9:00 pm as streets in District 1 had regular maintenance work done, according to the Urban Traffic Management Zone No.1.
Designed to last 100 years, the granite surface of the Nguyen Hue pedestrian street has deteriorated after only one year.
As observed by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters, many of the granite stones along the sidewalks have become scratched or in some cases broken.
The surface damage had occurred even before the street underwent its final acceptance inspection.
The street’s developer said relevant agencies and departments are reviewing each of the subunits of the project before officially beginning the final acceptance inspection.
