PM requests Vietnam-Germany university project be sped up

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has requested the construction of the Vietnamese-German University (VGU)’s new campus in the southern province of Binh Duong be accelerated.

The VGU, founded in 2008 under the two Governments’ cooperation, is hoped to become a high-quality research university.

The university is currently located in Thu Dau Mot City, and will be relocated to Ben Cat Town once the campus is completed.

The construction of the new campus began in October 2016, with total investment of more than US$200 million, including US$180.4 million of soft loans from the International Development Association (IDA) and US$20.2 million from the Vietnamese Government.

The project, covering 50.5ha, is divided into two phases. In Phase 1, the facility will be established for a maximum capacity of 5,000 students and prepared for its planned relocation in 2019. In Phase 2, it will be completed to serve 12,000 students.

However, progress is lagging behind schedule due to problems in project management.

PM Phuc assigned the Ministry of Education and Training to review the project’s implementation, eliminate intermediary steps and replace incapable contractors.

He also told the ministry to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, relevant agencies and German partners to propose a specific financial mechanism for the VGU.
