PM okays LED lighting promotion in Vietnam

The Prime Minister has approved a project to develop LED (lighting-emitting diode) lighting technology in Vietnam partly funded by the United Nations Development Programme via the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Conducted by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emission by using more domestically-manufactured LED lighting products.

It will devise a national roadmap for LED lighting development that is subject to a biennial review, establish universal quality standards for LED lighting products while raising public awareness of its benefits through workshops and training courses.

LED displays indoors and outdoors are also planned.

The nationwide project will last for four years at a total cost of over US$8.1 million, including more than US$1.5 million in non-refundable aid from GEF and US$6.4 million in kind from Vietnam.

LED is a special type of semiconductor diode which can generate a narrow spectrum. LED lamps can create different colours, depending on the semiconductor materials and operating conditions.
