Landslide at Lai Chau hydropower construction site leaves five dead, four injured

VOV.VN - A landslide occurred at the construction site of the Ta Pao Ho 1A Hydropower Plant in Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province, on May 16 morning, leaving five dead and four injured.

The incident happened at around 10:30 A.M. as workers were clearing the foundation pit beneath the dam area when a section of the road slope collapsed. A mass of soil and rocks slid down the slope, burying several workers below.

A large number of rescue forces, including police, military personnel, and local officials, were actively engaged in recovery operations.

Two excavators were deployed to clear debris, as the affected area lies approximately 40 meters below the slope, near the stream where the victims were trapped.

Rushing to the scene, Sung A Sua, deputy director of the Lai Chau provincial police, directed the rescue efforts and urged swift action to retrieve those buried under debris.

Initial reports from local authorities confirmed that five people were killed in the landslide, while four others were injured and immediately taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

The Ta Pao Ho 1A & 1B Hydropower Project Cluster consists of two adjacent hydropower plants, with Ta Pao Ho 1A located upstream and Ta Pao Ho 1B positioned downstream. Situated approximately 90 kilometers from Lai Chau city, the cluster harnesses hydropower from the Ta Pao Ho stream basin, spanning the communes of Si Lo Lau and Mo Si San in Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province.

Together, the two hydropower projects have a combined installed capacity of 24 MW, with a total investment of VND911 billion. These are part of eight hydropower projects being developed in Lai Chau and Dien Bien provinces by the Kosy Group, the primary project investor.
