Dr. Tam recommended that people understand the disease to prevent it, not to panic. Full vaccinations and periodic booster vaccinations are effective solutions to prevent disease.
Last last week, an 18-year-old girl died of diphtheria in central Nghe An province, Another girl tested positive for the disease on July 6 after getting in close contact with the first patient.
The girl returned to northern Bac Giang province without knowing that she had contracted the disease.
More than 100 people who had contact with the girl in Bac Giang were put in quarantine for medical surveillance, and one of them also tested positive for the disease on July 10.
The Ministry of Health requested Nghe An and Bac Giang provinces to immediately take measures to keep the disease at bay in the community.
