Giant whale found dead in central Vietnam
VOV.VN - Part of a decomposing whale weighing approximately three tonnes has been discovered washed up on a beach in Dien Chau district of Nghe An province, central Vietnam.

According to local authorities, at 5:30 a.m. on May 11, part of the whale’s body was found on the shore along the coast in Ngoc My village of Dien Hung commune by some fishermen who then reported it to local authorities.
When the whale was found, it was in the decomposition process, they said, speculating that the whale might have died several weeks ago. It was roughly 30 metres in length and more than 10 tonnes in weight.
The heavily decomposed whale was subsequently buried in the traditional rituals.
It can be customary for many residents of coastal areas nationwide to believe that whales help fishermen who are at sea, therefore they often rescue the animals running aground or bury them in solemn ceremonies if they are found dead.
All along the Vietnamese coast, whales are revered as bringers of good fortune for those at sea. Indeed, temples and festivals worshipping the creatures are commonly found in communities close to the sea.
