Adjustments to master plan on air transport approved

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has recently signed a decision approving adjustments to the master plan on air transport development till 2020 with vision to 2030.

The plan aims for Vietnam’s air transport market to be among the top four in ASEAN by 2030 in terms of volume and with a fleet of modern aircraft. Three passenger and cargo transportation centres on par with ASEAN standards will be established.

The number of air passengers is hoped to increase by 16 percent per year for 2015-2020 and 8% for 2020-2030 while the volume of cargo is expected to rise 18% annually for 2015-2020 and 12% for the 2020-2030 period.

By 2020, airliners are expected to handle about 64 million passengers and 570,000 tonnes of cargo. The respective figures by 2030 are 131 million passengers and 1.7 million tonnes of cargo.

Meanwhile, airports are hoped to handle about 131 million passengers and 2.2 million tonnes of cargo by 2020.

Among 13 domestic and 10 international airports, Noi Bai, Da Nang, Tan Son Nhat and Cam Ranh airports will be international gateways.

In the north, there are Noi Bai, Van Don, Cat Bi and Vinh international airports and Dien Bien, Tho Xuan and Dong Hoi domestic ones. In the central region, Phu Bai, Da Nang and Cam Ranh are international airports while Chu Lai, Pleiku, Phu Cat and Tuy Hoa are domestic ones.

In the south, Tan Son Nhat, Can Tho and Phu Quoc airports will serve domestic and foreign passengers while Buon Ma Thuot, Lien Khuong, Phan Thiet, Con Dao, Rach Gia and Ca Mau airports offer domestic routes.

The aviation sector will upgrade and extend 21 existing airports and will also embark on the first-stage construction of Long Thanh international airport, build Van Don, Phan Thiet and Sa Pa airports and others according to the master plan.

Priority will be given to developing logistic centres in Noi Bai, Da Nang and Tan Son Nhat international airports.

Among 15 domestic and 13 international airports, Noi Bai, Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Tan Son Nhat, Long Thanh will be international gateways by 2030.

Between now and 2020, national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines is set to continue as a core airliner with its competitiveness among the top in ASEAN.

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam and the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporate will be required to improve operating efficiency.

Aviation firms will be given fair access to infrastructure and land in airports at reasonable costs.
