The Abbott Fund launched a new programme on September 12 to further expand its Child Nutritional Programme in Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Tri provinces through its implementing agencies AmeriCare and Giao Diem.

The US$51,000 programme aims to improve child nutrition among 2,000 school children by providing nourishing foods including Ensure, Similac, Isomil, and multivitamins as well as paediatric and nutritional education to teachers and health workers.

The Child Nutrition Programme also aims to enrich the diets of malnourished children by training educators in good nutrition, while providing nourishing and affordable local food to supplement the nutritional needs of children enrolled in local elementary schools.

Under the programme, school children will be provided with daily vitamins and supplements to increase their caloric intake.

The percentage of underweight children in Vietnam declined from 54 percent to 15 percent, while anaemia rates declined from 51 percent to 9 percent.
