New UK Ambassador to Vietnam begins new term of office

VOV.VN - Gareth Ward, the newly-accredited UK Ambassador to Vietnam, presented credentials of Queen Elizabeth II to President Tran Dai Quang in Hanoi on August 7, commencing his tenure as UK ambassador to Vietnam.

Addressing the reception, Ambassador Gareth Ward expressed his honour to be the new ambassador to Vietnam, especially when the UK-Vietnam relations have entered a new phase.

After 45 years of diplomatic ties and eight years of strategic partnership, bilateral relations have developed in a deeper manner.

Next year, after leaving the European Union (EU), the UK’s goal is to maintain special relationship with the EU as well as strengthening its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

The diplomat expressed a wish to foster high-level relations with the Southeast Asia in future as bilateral ties have significantly contributed to boosting common development and prosperity and resolving global issues.

Ambassador Gareth Ward is an experienced diplomat. He started working for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1996.

He has assumed important positions such as Consul General at St.Petersburg, Russia in the 2010-2013 period and the Head of China Department at FCO from 2013 up to now. He is married with two children.
