Nation underlines full enforcement of long-term ceasefire in Libya
VOV.VN - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, has called on all stakeholders to fully enforce provisions set out in the long-term ceasefire agreement in Libya that was originally signed on October 23, thereby facilitating a transitional period towards elections in the North African country.
In an address given to an online meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) held on December 15 to discuss current issues in Libya, the Vietnamese diplomat reaffirmed the country’s support for a comprehensive political solution that is both led and owned by Libyans. Indeed, any resolution to issues must be done on the basis of respect for Libyan independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Ambassador Quy welcomed a range of important and positive ongoing developments in Libya, especially the long-term ceasefire agreement that was previously reached by relevant parties, all of whom gave their consent for future elections to be held.
The Vietnamese diplomat also highlighted support of the UNSC’s document that backs the implementation and monitoring of the ceasefire that is in line with the council’s relevant resolutions on Libya. He went on to express hope that the monitoring mechanism will ensure objectivity, effectiveness, efficiency, and close co-operation with stakeholders in the North African nation.
Meanwhile, the UNSC issued a press release at the conclusion of the meeting to welcome the efforts of the UNSMIL, neighbouring countries, and regional organisations in promoting the ongoing peace process in Libya. Indeed, there have been a number of positive developments in politics and security in the North African country, while underscoring the importance of establishing an effective and reliable ceasefire surveillance mechanism to ensure a lasting peace.
