Indian scholars: President’s visit adds impetus to Vietnam-India ties

Indian scholars have highly valued Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang’s State visit to India early this month, affirming that it created a new momentum for sustainable relations of the two countries in the future.

In a recent interview to the Vietnam News Agency,Professor, Dr. Pankaj Jha, a senior faculty member with Jindal School of International Affairs (c) and Editor-in- Chief of the JSIA Journal, highlighted the significance of the visit, saying that it opens new vistas of cooperation between the two sides in many fields, from politics, security-defence, to culture exchange. 


The two sides signed three memorandums of understanding (MoUs), focusing on trade and investment, agriculture and atomic energy, power production, hydrocarbon, renewable energy, pharmaceutical production, textile and garment, infrastructure development, tourism, and ICT. 

The MoU between the Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership (GCNEP) and Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute is an effort to promote contributions of the nuclear energy sector to the two countries’ energy industry, as well as enhance their cooperation in the field, he said. 

In his speech at Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi, President Quang mentioned the term “Indian Ocean – Asia – the Pacific”, and this is a new signal for stronger cooperation between the two countries in the coming time. 

President Quang also praised the role and detailed plans in India’s “Act East” Policy, he added.

The highlight of the speech is that it stressed the need for the two countries to boost cooperation across fields, from politics, culture, economy, defence and their joint effort to promote peace in the region, he affirmed

Meanwhile, Faisal Ahmed - an expert specialising in international trade and geopolitics from FORE School of Management Faculty, said President Quang’s visit contributed to calling for measures for challenges related to geopolitics, security and defence. 

President Quang’s speech raised the question of how to diversify trade, towards fostering two-way trade between the two countries, he stressed. 

He also invited Indian firms to cooperate with Vietnam in exploit oil and gas in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone in the context that India has strategic interest in the East Sea. 

Vineeta Pandey, Senior Editor from “the Pioneer” newspaper, said thanks to Vietnam, India becomes closer to other ASEAN member nations, stressing that India needs to thank Vietnam for its effort as the coordinator of the India-ASEAN. 

She also highlighted that President Quang’s speech at Nehru Memorial Museum conveyed a message of win-win cooperation, and mentioned challenges facing the two sides. 

Meanwhile, PhD. Arniban Ganguly – Director of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation, stressed the visit helped further strengthen the relations between the two countries.

He spoke of President Quang’s speech at Nehru Memorial Museum, saying it set out a roadmap for cooperation between the two nations in all domains.

President Tran Dai Quang paid a State visit to India from March 2-4 at the invitation of Indian President Ram Nath Kovind.
