Vietnam likely to hold general election three months earlier than scheduled
VOV.VN - The National Assembly Standing Committee has proposed holding general election three months earlier than scheduled to timely complete the State apparatus following streamlining efforts.

Presenting a report at the ongoing sitting of the National Assembly in Hanoi on May 12, Vice Chairwoman of the legislature Nguyen Thi Thanh said the National Assembly Standing Committee has proposed shortening the current 15th National Assembly and People’s Councils’ 2021–2026 term by three months, ending in early April 2026 instead of July as originally scheduled.
She stated that the proposal aims to narrow the gap between the 14th National Party Congress set to begin in early 2026 and the first session of the new legislature, allowing for timely consolidation of high-level leadership and the assignment of new Party Central Committee members.
The Standing Committee also proposed that Sunday, March 15, 2026, be the date for the election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term, earlier than the traditional May schedule.
According to Article 71 of the Constitution, the term of each National Assembly is five years. In special cases, the National Assembly may decide to shorten or extend its term based on a proposal from the Standing Committee, provided that at least two-thirds of the total number of deputies vote in favour.
Vietnam is also reorganising its provincial- and commune-level administrative units, with a plan to eliminate the district level. This reform aims to streamline the state apparatus, improve governance efficiency, reduce budget expenditures, and better meet the country’s development needs in the new era.
