National Assembly deputies elect President of Vietnam on October 21

According to the proposed agenda for consideration by the National Assembly, the National Assembly will elect the President on the first day of the session, in accordance with the Constitution and the law, said Nguyen Thanh Hai, head of the Deputy Affairs Committee, at a press briefing in Hanoi on October 20.

Hai also said at its recent 10th plenum, the Party Central Committee voted to unanimously introduce a candidate eligible for the position of President to the National Assembly for voting.

The National Assembly will also spend time carrying out other personnel-related tasks within its authority.

The eighth session of the legislature will open at the National Assembly building on October 21, and is expected to conclude on November 30. The year-end session will be conducted in two phases, with Phase 1 lasting from October 21 to November 13, and Phase 2 from November 20 to November.

Due to a heavy workload, the National Assembly will work for four Saturdays, with a total working duration of approximately 29.5 days.

It will dedicate the majority of time to legislative work, supreme oversight, and addressing socio-economic issues, along with several other important matters.

Notably, the legislature is expected to pass 15 bills, including those on notarization (amended); trade unions (amended); cultural heritage (amended); geology and minerals; prevention and combat of human trafficking (amended); fire prevention, firefighting, and rescue; civil defense; value added tax (amended); health insurance; and amendments and supplements to certain provisions of the Law on Planning, Law on Investment, Law on Public-Private Partnerships, and Law on Bidding.

During the session, the National Assembly will also consider and decide on the investment policy for the North-South high-speed rail project.
