Vietnam sends another officer to UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan
VOV.VN - The Ministry of National Defence held a ceremony in Hanoi on June 5 to present the President’s decision appointing an officer to the United Nations UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Major Tran Viet Cuong from the Armoured Corps has been assigned the role of Military Observer at UNMISS to replace Captain Nguyen Tien Long.
Cuong has completed all relevant training courses both domestically and abroad, meeting the operational standards of both the United Nations and the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence. Preparations for his deployment have been finalised, and he is scheduled to depart on June 12.
During the ceremony, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defence, congratulated Cuong on his new assignment and commended the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations for its thorough preparation and personnel development efforts. He noted that the security situation in South Sudan remains highly volatile, with frequent clashes and airstrikes. As military observers, he said, Vietnamese personnel are required to conduct regular patrols and operate outside mission headquarters.
To meet these requirements, Gen. Chien asked the assigned officer to strictly adhere to the Party’s directives, national laws, military discipline, United Nations regulations, and the host country’s legal framework.
Speaking at the ceremony, Cuong expressed his deep sense of honour and responsibility for the new assignment.
“I have thoroughly prepared for this mission and am fully committed to fulfilling my duties,” he said. “I promise to actively participate in humanitarian activities, and help promote the image of Vietnam as a peace-loving, compassionate, and friendly nation.”
To date, Vietnam has deployed nearly 1,100 personnel to United Nations peacekeeping operations at three missions and the UN Headquarters. This growing involvement underscores the country’s ongoing commitment to global peace and stability.
Currently, Engineering Unit Rotation 4 and Level 2 Field Hospital Rotation 7 are undergoing intensive training at the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations and Military Hospital 175 in preparation for their scheduled deployment in September.
According to mission leadership and UN authorities, Vietnamese peacekeepers have demonstrated strong dedication, professionalism, and discipline in fulfilling their assigned tasks. Their practical contributions and humanitarian efforts have earned them high praise from mission commanders, international colleagues, and local communities.
