Vietnam seeks WHO assistance in disease response, universal health care
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 6, showing both sides’ strong commitment to enhancing cooperation in public health and global health security.

During the meeting, the WHO Director-General praised Vietnam’s sound policies and efforts in disease prevention, primary healthcare development, and universal health coverage.
He affirmed that WHO stands ready to support and advise Vietnam in key areas, especially in strengthening the grassroots healthcare system, improving health-related policies, and promoting sustainable public health and disease prevention.
Prime Minister Chinh, for his part, thanked WHO for its effective support during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping Vietnam become one of the few countries to successfully contain the virus and recover quickly.
He shared that Vietnam is shifting its healthcare approach, focusing more on disease prevention and health promotion, rather than just treatment, with an emphasis on strengthening primary healthcare and public health infrastructure. The country also closely monitors and regularly refers to WHO’s recommendations and those of other international organisations regarding global disease trends.
The Prime Minister called on WHO to continue playing a leading role in disease research and early warning, while increasing international cooperation in health and pandemic preparedness. He also requested that WHO send experts to help Vietnam develop healthcare policies, build grassroots-level medical infrastructure, and improve living and health conditions for the population.
Both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation between Vietnam and WHO as part of broader global efforts to protect human health and effectively respond to current and future disease outbreaks.
