Southern Kien Giang province is working with oceanographers to zone off the coral reefs and seaweed-inhabited areas around Phu Quoc Island.

Studies released by the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute said that the island is home to nine species of seaweeds, which cover an area of more than 7,200 ha, mostly in the Ham Ninh Sea. The seaweeds provide an abundant source of food to the Dugong, an extremely rare animal species of global environmental concern listed in the Red Book and there are only ten of this species living in the area.

According to the results of the studies, coral reefs grow in the southern part of Phu Quoc Island, covering a total area of 362ha.
