Vietnamese rescue forces return to Hanoi after Myanmar earthquake recovery mission

On the evening of April 8, a flight departing from Yangon safely landed at Noi Bai International Airport, bringing back the Vietnamese rescue and relief team from the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Public Security after their mission to assist in earthquake recovery efforts in Myanmar.

Senior Lieutenant General Vu Hai San, Deputy Minister of National Defence, and Lieutenant General Le Van Tuyen, Deputy Minister of Public Security, welcome the delegation at the airport, presenting them flowers to congratulate the 106 officers and professional soldiers on successfully completing their mission.

After nine days of search and rescue operations in Myanmar, the Vietnamese rescue workers have recovered 35 bodies and handed them over to local authorities and families, alongside rescuing one survivor.

The rescue team from the Ministry of Public Security, consisting of 26 members, have directly rescued 7 people trapped under the rubble and handed them over to their families. They have also collaborated with local rescue teams to save 7 more victims.

The 80-member rescue team from the Ministry of National Defence have recovered 21 bodies and handed them over to local authorities and families.

The Vietnamese rescue team, in coordination with rescue forces from Myanmar and Turkey, have successfully rescued a 26-year-old man trapped under the rubble after five days of the earthquake.

Vietnamese search and rescue dogs have also engaged in the operations in Myanmar.

According to Major General Pham Van Ty, Deputy Director of the Search and Rescue Department and Chief Commander of the Vietnamese People's Army rescue forces, the rescue and relief operations in Myanmar were significantly more difficult and dangerous compared to those in Turkey. The Vietnamese team worked under intense heat, and many of the buried bodies had already decomposed, affecting their health. During the mission, aftershocks continued to occur in Myanmar, posing ongoing risks to the rescue forces.

“We approached the search for victims trapped under the rubble as if we were searching for our own family members, our fellow countrymen because the people of Myanmar are our brothers and sisters," says the Major General, adding the Vietnamese rescue forces have received appreciation from Myanmar authorities and people.
