Hanoi strengthens COVID-19 prevention ahead of Christmas celebrations

VOV.VN - The authorities of Hoan Kiem district have banned locals and vehicles from all routes leading to St Joseph’s Cathedral and limited gatherings in Hanoi’s Old Quarter during the capital’s upcoming Christmas celebrations.

Pham Tuan Long, chairman of the People's Committee of  Hoan Kiem district, says all streets leading to St Joseph’s Cathedral, including Au Trieu, Nha Chung, and Nha Tho streets will close between 6 p.m. on December 24 and 2 a.m. on December 25. This will be done in order to ensure safety for the public as the capital is currently witnessing over 1,000 daily COVID-19 cases.

Checkpoints are set up throughout the area. Only residents and guests with an invitation from the cathedral or permits from security forces will be allowed in.

Hang Ma street, which typically attracts lots of people every Christmas, faces limits to the number of people and vehicles permitted to enter and leave the area.

On-duty officials continuously remind people of the need to limit activities involving large gatherings to ensure security and order during Christmas celebrations.

Local police recommend that people take other routes to avoid traffic congestion at checkpoints. The checkpoints will be lifted following Christmas Eve.
