Vietnamese pepper export earnings surge 39% despite lower volume
VOV.VN - Vietnam exported 98,600 tonnes of pepper for US$684.4 million in the first five months of this year, down 13.6% in volume but up 39.2% in earnings year on year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MOAE).
The average export price of Vietnamese pepper was estimated to have reached US$6,937.4 per tonne, increasing by 61.1% compared to the same period last year.
MOAE statistics show the average export price of black pepper stood at US$6,300 to US$6,400 per tonne, whilst that of white pepper was US$9,300 per tonne.
In May alone, the country shipped 25,000 tonnes of pepper of all types abroad, bringing in US$176 million in export value.
The United States, Germany, and India all remained the largest export markets for Vietnamese pepper, accounting for 26.1%, 9.7%, and 8.1% of the total market share.
Notably, export value to Germany jumped 87.8%, followed by India with 84.1% and the US with 32.4% growth compared to the same period last year.
Hoang Thi Lien, chairwoman of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, notes that despite global supply shortages, Vietnamese pepper continues to be recognised for its quality. This favourable perception offers a strategic advantage for Vietnam to expand its export value and strengthen its position in the global pepper market.
