The Japanese government has agreed to provide US$92,000 to help Roi Koi Commune in Sa Thay District (Kon Tum province) upgrade its irrigation system under a contract signed at the Japanese embassy in Hanoi on July 21.

The aid will be used to purchase materials for upgrading the Dak Ro Tim irrigation canal, which was built in the 1990s to water two crops a year.

Panels alongside the canal have now broken with silt accumulating in its bed, obstructing water flow and causing a negative impact on agricultural production.

At the signing ceremony, the Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Sa Thay District, Vo Van Manh, said that the aid will directly help increase local agricultural production, and reduce poverty and deforestation in the commune.

Meanwhile, Japanese Ambassador Mitsuo Sakaba expressed his hope that the project will improve food production in Ro Koi and strengthen friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and Vietnam.
