Argentina becomes largest corn supplier to Vietnamese market

VOV.VN - Argentina sold 3.19 million tonnes of corn valued at US$772.29 million to Vietnam in the past seven months, becoming the largest supplier of the product to the market.

The Argentine volume accounted for 55.5% of Vietnam’s total corn imports, said the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

This was followed by Brazil with 1.57 million tonnes worth US$402.69 million.

Overall, Vietnam spent up to US$1.43 billion buying 5.74 million tonnes of corn worldwide in the reviewed period, representing increases of 34% in volume and 1.9% in value compared to the same period last year.

The average price of imported corn stood at US$249 per tonne, representing a drop of 24% year on year.

Meanwhile, two of Vietnam’s largest five corn suppliers were Laos and Thailand from ASEAN region.

Specifically, the country imported 74,589 tonnes from Laos worth US$18.6 million, up 23.4% in volume but down 11.8% in value year on year.

Thailand’s corn exports to the Vietnamese market reached 3,410 tonnes worth US$12 million, down by 27% and 25%, respectively from the previous year.
