The Vietnamese film tells the story of a traffic accident that takes place in front of a sidewalk food stall and spontaneously connects the life of three young people.
Speaking to French magazine Polyester, Pham Thien An said he came up with the concept one night as he was drinking with his friends.
The director mentioned that he saw a boy who worked as a fire blower and would go to each table of the restaurant to sell candies and ask for money for a performance. He mentioned that going on nights out allowed the boy to eavesdrop on many stories which were part of the overall creative process.
He began to imagine a story involving the fire blower and three more young people who were present, followed by a motorbike accident taking place.
Born in 1989, Pham Thien An, won second prize during the 48 Hours Short Film Competition in 2014. His latest short film, titled The Mute, enjoyed its world premiere screening at the Palm Springs International Shortfest in the United States. It has since been selected to compete in nearly 15 international film festivals including the Winterthur International Short Film Festival, the Tampere Film Festival, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the Encounters Film Festival, and the Aspen Shortsfest.
