Singaporean conductor to perform in HCM City

Vietnamese violist Pham Vu Thien Bao will perform in a concert of great French composers’ masterpieces under the baton of Singaporean conductor Darrell Ang at the Opera House on July 12.

The “Dancing with the Great French Composers” concert will highlight compositions by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Léo Delibes, Adolphe Adam, Hector Berlioz, Henri Casadesus, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Camille Saint-Saens.

The night will open with excerpts from the ballet Les Indes galantes (The Amorous Indies), a French baroque opera-ballet about love, jealousy and redemption, composed by Rameau in 1735, which will be performed by the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera’s (HBSO) symphony orchestra.

Bao, viola principal of HBSO symphony orchestra and Saigon Chamber Orchestra, will continue the concert with La Paix, Act III in the ballet Coppélia by Delibes in 1870.

The music in Coppélia is a transitional thread between two great historical periods, the French Romantic style and the Russian Classical style.

His performance will also feature Pas de deux, Act II of the all-time favourite ballet Giselle by Adam, the third movement titled Serenade of an Abruzzi-mountaineer from the symphony Harold in Italy in G Major by Berlioz, and the third movement from Viola Concerto in the Style of J.C. Bach by Casadesus.

Bao, who holds a master's degree in viola performance from the Paris National Conservatory of Music, has performed with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet.

He has worked with famous conductors such as François-Xavier Roth and Tetsuji Honna.

Bao has been teaching viola and chamber ensemble at the HCM City Conservatory of Music since 2016.

After the intermission, the HBSO symphony orchestra will present two masterpieces by Debussy, including a symphonic poem for orchestra, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un Faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun), and Clair de lune, the third segment in a four-movement composition for piano suite named Suite bergamasque.

The night will end with Danse macabre, Op. 40, a symphonic poem for orchestra, written in 1874 by Saint-Saens, and Boléro, a 1928 composition for large orchestra by Ravel.

Singaporean conductor and composer Ang will stage and conduct the concert.

Ang received his early musical education at the age of four when he began to play the violin and the piano.

He studied conducting at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, Russia. He also became the first Conducting Fellow at the Yale School of Music in the US.

Ang has conducted the leading orchestras in Asia, the Far East, and Europe.

Since 2017, he has served as Artistic Director & Chief Conductor of the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra of China.

The concert will begin at 8pm at 7 Lam Son Square in District 1. Tickets are available at the box office and ticketbox.vn.
